Yorkshire, UK, quintet Thine originally formed in 1995, with their debut demo ‘Journeys’ surfacing the following year, even receiving a limited release through the established Black Tears distribution. The demo was lauded for its great blend of heaviness, powerful vocals, and strong atmospherics. This was quickly followed by the ‘Blue Tape’ demo, showcasing a darker and more sombre mood to the compositions. This demo led to the band signing with Peaceville Records, and the first fruits of this union (aside from the Nick Cave cover ‘Song of Joy’ which featured on the label’s ‘X’ compilation) was debut album ‘A Town Like This’, in 1998.

Recorded at Academy Studios - notable for its production of classic albums by the likes of My Dying Bride, Anathema, Paradise Lost and Cradle of Filth – ‘A Town Like This’ was the band’s own unique brand of genre-defying metal, later to be fittingly termed ‘Metal Noir’ in the press. Utilising metal, progressive rock, ambient music, classical, jazz and various theatrical elements, the album sounded quite unlike anything else at the time, with journalists praising its unconventional, epic compositions and schizophrenic in-song changes, often marking comparisons with prog bands such as Genesis and King Crimson. Lyrically the album is a gothic-tinged existential and social piece about the twisted nature of society and its dark inhabitants.
